Greta Thunberg Did Not Hold Back On Manoel Island Saga

“I think it is madness in a time of environmental and climate emergencies to build more luxury establishments,” said Thunberg. “What we need is a system that prioritises people and our wellbeing above profits. Keeping the green spaces is one simple and very concrete way of doing it.”

During her brief time in Malta, Thunberg claimed that the Manoel Island construction plan is a step in the wrong direction for the quality of life and the future of the island.

“We are honoured to have had the opportunity to meet Greta Thunberg while she was in Malta and had a chat with her about Manoel Island and our campaign. Of course, the people of Malta do not need Greta to tell them that we need green open spaces where we live, but as a modern icon of environmentalism and social justice, it does not come as a surprise that her views on the necessity of public open green spaces mirror ours,” said Manoel Island: Post Għalina.

It went on to say “We encourage the public to sign the petition calling for Manoel Island to be turned into a public park – small actions carried out by the masses can have lasting impacts on our lives. 14,000 Maltese residents have already signed, and we have just over a week to go.”

According to the Manoel Island developers MIDI, several residences and retail outlets will be developed. On the other side of the scale, 63% of the space on the island (equivalent to 175,000 square metres) will be dedicated to public open spaces.

In March, the Post Għalina campaign was launched to put Manoel Island back on the national agenda. “The parliamentary petition has been wildly successful,” said Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar coordinator Astrid Vella. “In just one month, it has already eclipsed the previous petition, showing that public support for a national heritage park on Manoel Island has only become more popular in the last five years.”

The petition just hit 13,000 and only needs 2,000 more votes to hit the campaign’s goal of 15,000. The Post Għalina petition can be signed through this link: https://parlament.mt/en/petition?id=257
