A hedgehog family was successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild by Nature Trust after the mother and its hoglets were found underneath a boat in Birgu.

“Happy ending for a hedgehog family,” Nature Trust announced on social media, sharing photos of the rehabilitated babies and their mother.

“On 1st July we received a call from a person who found a mother hedgehog and newborn babies under a boat in the Birgu regatta club,” the environmental organisation explained.

“One of our volunteers went immediately on the scene and collected the whole family, which was then taken into rehab so the babies could grow up with their mum in a safe place.”

“The babies thrive much more when they’re with their mother, and learn normal hunting and hedgehog behaviour more easily than when they need to be hand-reared,” they explained.

“After observing that they could fend on their own in case they get separated from their mother, this week they were all released back into the wild.

“Good luck little fellas, try to stay out of trouble.”

“All the animals we rescue are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to keep them as pets,” they warned.

Nature Trust also added that its volunteers have wildlife handling permits and training as well as equipment in order to rescue these creatures.

If you spot any of the wild animals that we rescue injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.

“A massive thank you always goes to the public who call us when they notice an animal in distress, our vets, and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers,” they said.

“We thank you in advance for your support and help.”
