Illegal Dumping And Concrete Rubble Walls Pop Up In Birguma

Illegal dumping as well as rubble walls being constructed using concrete have popped up in a natural area in Birguma.

Sources informed Lovin Malta that they believe “illegal practices” are taking place along Triq il-Widna Radar in Birguma.

“The place currently looks like a disaster area, and boulders, rocks and soil generated by the works, as well as random litter and waste is being dumped along the side of this track onto the garigue,” they told Lovin Malta.

“It was also reported to me on 8th September by an eyewitness that the contractor is using a jackhammer to cut into the protected garigue to use the stone for the rubble wall.”

“I understand that this is totally illegal!  Cement is also being used in the construction of the rubble walls,” they explained.

Lovin Malta reached out to the Environment and Resources Authority to get a comment on the matter.

“The indicated rubble wall construction works are subject to the Rubble Walls and Rural Structures (Conservation and Maintenance) Regulations (SL552.01), which fall under development planning laws,” a representative told Lovin Malta.

“In this regard, the ERA is following closely with the Planning Authority on the case.”

Lovin Malta had previously reported on malpractice involving the construction of rubble walls, with the traditional method specifying that no cement should ever be used.
