‘I’m Very Disappointed’: Mellieħa Local Council Ignores Councillor’s Appeal To Save Green Lung

PN Mellieħa councillor Gabriel Micallef found deafening silence when he attempted to discuss an area of untouched land in Mellieħa that just went up for sale with his council members.

This comes after a green lung in the middle of a residential area along Triq is-Sagħtar and Triq il-Miġbħa went up for sale.

This comes as Environment Minister Miriam Dalli’s Project Green pledges to transform unused land into green lungs for the public.

“I asked during the council meeting that we discuss and come up with a clear position on the Tal-Qortin site between Triq is-Sagħtar and Triq il-Miġħa,” Micallef wrote on social media.

“My message was simple, mostly in light of the fact that we have an opportunity to protect this area, so we should do our best to deliver one message – to support the residents’ petition and call on the government and the authorities concerned to intervene,” he explained.

“I spoke about it because I believe that the only voice that the residents have is the council.”

“I’m disappointed with the decision of the majority of the council, that everything would remain as it is, and the land be sold according to the law,” he expressed.

“Another missed opportunity to protect virgin land.”

A few weeks back, a group of residents in Mellieħa launched a parliamentary petition to turn a green area that has just been allocated for residential development into a public open space.

This came after PN MP Ivan Castillo called out the “hypocrisy” behind the recently announced Project Green initiative after an open space in Mellieħa was designated for development and placed for sale by the government.

Castillo had publicly reacted to an advert on the Lands Authority website, which details a 5,300 square metre site to be used for residential dwellings, with 30% of the site to be retained as an open public space.

Do you think this green area should be saved?
