Injured Protected Bird Found With Gunshot Wounds At Majjistral Park

A protected bird was gunned down in Majjistral Park, the latest victim of illegal hunting.
Visitors found the wounded Kestrel at the border of the park, which is part of the Falcon family, and brought it to the HPF Ranger Unit which was nearby.
“It was handed over to BirdLife Malta who will bring it to the Government vet for a checkup,” the HPF Ranger Unit said in a Facebook post.
The Kestrel was discovered with gunshot wounds to its wings and is currently being given medical treatment.
“Kestrels are protected by Maltese Law as outlined in the Conservation of Wild Birds Regulation,” the ranger unit stressed.
Therefore, it is another breed that is legally prohibited to hunt or keep under the mentioned regulation.
The Kestrel is a medium-sized falcon with long wings and tail, typically found in open spaces around this time of the year and later in Spring again.
Protected birds often fall victim to illegal hunting, even within protected zones and sites with available patrolling rangers.
