‘Someone Needs To Shoulder Responsibility’: Julie Zahra Reacts To Archaeological Remains In Car Park

PN MP Julie Zahra has called for the need for someone to shoulder responsibility after historic archaeological remains ended up in a car park.

This comes after shocking photos recently started to circulate on social media showing old rubble walls and cart ruts “conserved” within a car park.

“If what is circulating in social media is true someone must take responsibility. The Planning Authority, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, or Heritage Malta? Or all of them?” Zahra said.

“And you, Owen Bonnici, what steps will you take if you really say you want to protect and safeguard the national heritage for future generations?”

“I told you that these entities are in bed together,” she said.

The photos were first posted by social media page Ugly Malta, captioning the photo of the cart ruts “scaling new heights in conservation”.

While many have speculated on the location, Lovin Malta confirmed that the photos were taken along Triq id-Difiża Ċivili and Triq tal-Qares in Mosta.

A few years back, a development had obtained major public criticism over the proposed plans consisting of residential units and underlying parking facilities which touched upon archaeological remains.

While many individuals and entities objected to the development due to the cart ruts and rubble walls, the development was still approved, on the condition that the remains are left untouched. But these ended up in an underground car park.

This is not the first time that Malta has conserved historical remains in an unsightly manner, with traditional niċċeċ often being incorporated into the facade of a modern building, just for the sake of conservation.

Do you think responsibility needs to be shouldered?
