334 New Mooring Bays Proposed As Part Of Kalkara Marina Project As Objections Pour In
A staggering 334 new mooring bays are being proposed as part of the Kalkara Marina Project, as objections against the plans are pouring in.
The application was filed by Kevin Farrugia on behalf of Transport Malta, with Perit Eric Formosa overlooking the plans.
The plans propose new mooring bays along the Kalkara creek, with some labelling it as a fully-fledged attempt at extending the existing yacht marina.
“This is unacceptable. In a country where the population is alarmed at the rapidly diminishing public and open spaces, the last thing Malta needs is further hogging of its coast and sea,” one read.
The site in question is also a highly sensitive archaeological area, as previous investigations of the harbour area outlined how deposits resulted in multiple archaeological discoveries.
This proposal also runs counter to the relative Local Plan and SPED Objectives, mainly the Costal Objective 1 and 3 which state that existing coastal recreational resources should be protected, enhanced and accessible to the public.
The plans will also increase congestion, as well as negatively impact the quality of life of residents and tourists visiting the area alike.
Such intensification of moorings will also endanger the ecology of the sea, as well as generate an increase in air and water pollution to the detriment of marine ecology.
Furthermore, no public consultation was carried out to address any feedback or concerns that people might have about the project.
Among objections, the Kingfisher Sport Fishing Associated has also filed its representation against the project, stressing that this will decrease accessibility for anyone wanting to use the coast.
