‘Kuntratturi, Xebbajtuna’: Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer Speaks Out Against Ravaging Of Santa Luċija

Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer has spoken out against a number of developments happening in the quaint town of Santa Luċija.
Reacting primarily to a number of large proposed developments in the area, and calling for the updating of the local plans, Engerer stressed that these green, open, and cultural spaces are all under threat.
“Kuntratturi Xebbajtuna,” Engerer said on social media. “The 2006 local plans are destroying our natural heritage. We cannot remain idle.”
“Santa Luċija is unique in Malta. Planned for the well-being of its residents, with open spaces, green spaces, and cultural spaces. A locality where everything is in equilibrium. A Bauhaus locality,” he said.
“This is all under threat!”
“A number of planning applications are seeking to build large apartment complexes that would destroy not only fields but also the locality’s equilibrium.”
“When I met with a number of residents of this beautiful locality, they sadly told me that it seems everything is currently under attack, with several private projects being planned that could disrupt this delicate balance and harmony that is rare in our country,” he continued.
“Just a few weeks ago, I spoke about environmental degradation on natural public land in Mellieħa, and I cannot remain silent about what is being planned in Santa Luċija, even if it is happening on private land by private entities.”
One of the proposed developments to replace a green lung in the locality had reached well over 1,000 objections during the representations period – an application which was filed by architect and Labour’s Deputy Leader for party affairs Daniel Micallef.
These plans will see the construction of a five-storey, 1,273 sqm building which will include 36 apartments, five maisonettes, seven penthouses, and 75 garages, filed by construction magnate Anton Camilleri.
Beyond the concerns for the green area, the proposal exceeds the height limitation on all four facades due to being situated on a slope.
