‘I Can’t Do This Anymore’: Cami Appelgren Left Drained And Frustrated By Environmental Illegalities

Leading activist and ranger at the HPF Ranger Unit Cami Appelgren has expressed her frustration with being constantly surrounded by environmental illegalities, fearing that not enough is being done.
Appelgren is known for having done stellar work since she arrived on the Maltese islands when it comes to safeguarding the environment and raising awareness.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Appelgren explained how she needs to take a break in order to re-think the present situation when it comes to environmental matters in Malta.
“Going to be honest, I can’t do this anymore. The amount of illegalities, when you’re aware and spend time tackling it, is overwhelming,” Appelgren wrote.
“It drains every single person working within the field. It drains resources that could be used for so much better things. All because of a malfunctioning system, corruption and conflicts of interest,” she stated.
“I’m taking a month’s break. Need to re-think. Need to re-evaluate what matters and what does not.”
Appelgren promised that she will be keeping people in the loop on her situation, stressing that she cannot continue dealing with this in the way she has up until now.
“I can’t do this anymore. Not in the way I’ve done it until now. The balance between staying sane/crazy, being safe/unsafe and succeeding/failing… I’m done.”
“Something has to change for NGOs and enforcement units to safeguard the environment with little to no resources at their hands and constant uphills in a system working against them. The game behind the scene is horrendous and tiring,” she said.
“My only comfort is that nature will make it. After the fall it will rise. Humans won’t.”
Appelgren also appealed to her followers to continue following the environmental work done by the HPF Rangers.
This comes just days after Appelgren experienced aggression while reporting law breakers illegally camping in the protected area of Għajn Tuffieħa, with the activist having had to go up to court countless amounts of times following threats and violence.
Appelgren’s post is pointing toward a much wider issue in Malta, with many members of society starting to experience a certain level of fatigue and exhaustion when it comes to combating environmental issues.
Stay strong Cami!
