LIDL Malta Has Replaced Single-Use Plastic Dishware With ‘Green’ Alternatives In All Eight Branches

LIDL Malta announced that it has stopped selling single-use dishware including plates, cups and cutlery from its shelves.

Instead, the discount store will be selling “green” eco-friendly alternatives which will be completely biodegradable and compostable.

This shift sees roughly five million dishware products removed from all eight of LIDL’s branches in Malta, saving nearly 27 tonnes of plastic consumption a year.

“The company wants to be at the frontline of the battle against single-use plastic,” said regional director of LIDL Malta, Mark Farrugia.

“Discontinuing single-use plastic from all our shelves will definitely leave a mark on our customers’ shopping habits. This will in turn positively influence behaviours and reap benefits for the environment.”

LIDL’s new biodegradable range will be made from Pla and Mater-Bi biopolymers which, when disposed of properly, can be recycled and turned into new resources.

This initiative forms part of LIDL’s commitment to reduce the use of plastic by 20% by 2025.
