Local Councillor Has A Plan To Make Birkirkara Green Again

In an effort to preserve the few open spaces we have left, Birkirkara Councillor Justin Schembri proposed to halt all plans relating to the construction of a home for the elderly on Ganu Street, Birkirkara. Schembri has instead suggested that this area be used for an underground residents’ car park, with an outdoor recreational area on top.

Schembri’s proposition has been well-received on Facebook. His proposal does not reject the idea of building a home for the elderly, but he suggests that the redevelopment of St. Phillip’s Hospital in Santa Venera could be a better solution, as it utilises already-existing infrastructure, and could possibly be turned into a senior village.

He argues that it would be an environmentally-conscious move to construct a recreational garden, and that the use of a finished building would avoid construction delays that would affect seniors.

Schembri plans to move forward with his proposal to the local council despite his disadvantage as a minority leader.
