Malta Bans Plastic Confetti And Outdoor Helium Balloon Releases

Article Featured Image

A new law now bans the tossing of plastic confetti and the outdoor release of non‑weighted helium balloons.

Events such as weddings and celebrations can still feature confetti — but only if it’s biodegradable.

Balloons may still be used, provided they are weighted so they cannot drift away into the environment outside the organiser’s control.

These regulations- published in the Government Gazette on 28th November- will come into force on 28th January.

An additional law prohibits placing plastic confetti on the market, also effective within two months.

The changes form part of Malta’s broader strategy to curb marine litter under the Single‑Use Plastic Products Strategy 2021–2030.
