Malta Has Largest Greenhouse Gas Emissions Increase In EU, Eurostat Study Reveals
A recent study published by Eurostat revealed data on quarterly estimates for greenhouse gas emissions by economic activity, and Malta has been labelled as the country with the largest increases.
In the last quarter of 2023, EU economy greenhouse gas emissions were predicted to be around 897 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents, resulting in a 0.4% decrease when compared to the same quarter of 2022, estimated at 935 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents. The EU’s gross domestic product (GDP) remained stable, having had a small increase of 0.2%.
These emissions were estimated to have decreased in 22 EU countries, with the largest reductions having been in Estonia, Bulgaria and Finland.
Increases in emissions were estimated for several countries, including Malta, Slovenia, Cyprus, Slovakia and Greece. Malta had the highest increase in greenhouse gas emissions, that of +7.7%. All five countries recorded a GDP increase, Malta’s being that of +4.3%.
