Malta International Airport Reveals Bold Net Zero Carbon Plan for 2050
Malta International Airport has unveiled its Net Zero Carbon Plan, detailing its strategy to decarbonise and set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Speaking at a press conference, Justine Baldacchino, Head of Sustainability and Analytics at Malta International Airport, highlighted the significant progress already made in the airport’s sustainability efforts.
Since 2015, the airport has reduced its controllable emissions by 31% and advanced steadily through the ranks of the Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program.
“As we aim to reach carbon neutrality next year and reduce emissions by 65% by 2030, Malta International Airport will adopt a dual approach: investing in clean energy production and enhancing the energy efficiency of our facilities,” Baldacchino stated.
To support these goals, the company is currently undertaking several large-scale projects. These include expanding its renewable energy portfolio with new photovoltaic farms both on the landside and airside, upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across all airport buildings, and converting all airfield lighting to more efficient LED alternatives.
