Malta was recognised as a climate mobility champion leader for its work in the climate change sector and the impact on small islands during an activity organised at COP28.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli received this recognition after a discussion with young climate activists from several countries, in particular from islands and small countries affected by climate change.

Minister Dalli said the fact that Malta is a small country does not mean that it is reducing its efforts to reduce emissions.

Dalli referred to the latest Eurostat statistics which show Malta as the country in the European Union with the lowest emissions per employed person.

Despite this, Malta is making various efforts to reduce emissions particularly from the energy sector, with policies on renewables, environmental financing and with the latest shore-to-ship project amongst others.

Minister Dalli also emphasised that the small countries, in particular the islands should come together to be one voice to bring forward their realities because they are the most likely to be badly affected by the consequences of climate change, including if the sea level rises.

At the end of this activity, Malta was recognised its strong message for small islands to be given the attention they deserve in discussions about climate change and its impact.
