Outdoor equipment brand Cotswold Outdoor have labelled Malta as the third best country for hiking in Europe, in their ‘Europe’s Top Alternative Living Spots’ study.

To determine the best countries, Cotswold looked at several factors, including the countries with the most hiking trails per square kilometre, the presence of UNESCO-protected sites and the percentage of forested coverage per square kilometre, amongst others.

“Malta ranks third, with its 315sq-km area featuring 19,315 hiking trails. This island nation uses its space efficiently to provide hikers with a range of routes that span its historical sites, coastal paths, and countryside. Malta’s trails offer a glimpse into the island’s rich culture and stunning natural beauty, making it a favoured destination for those who love to explore on foot.”

Popular trails include that of Dingli Cliffs and Fawwara, Għar Lapsi, Victoria Lines, Dwejra and many more.
