A former rubbish dump in Wied Fulija, Żurrieq will be turned into a national park of 95,000 square metres in size.

The Environment and Resources Authority announced its plans for Wied Fulija last year and the project will be officially launched by Environment Minister Jose Herrera this afternoon.

The re-greening project is expected to see hundreds of trees and thousands of shrubs planted, while picnic tables, benches and a dog park are also set to be included.

Several tonnes of glass waste will have to be removed before the project starts as the valley, which has been disused since the 1990s, has been illegally used as a dumping ground for years.

The project’s announcement comes as the government faces extensive criticism for the way trees are being removed as part of road upgrade works in Attard and Santa Luċija.
