Mounds Of Sand Appear At Miżieb Nature Reserve, FKNK Says It’s Part Of Regeneration Project

Mounds of sand have recently appeared at the Miżieb nature reserve in Mellieħa, raising questions about its purpose.

Photos sent to Lovin Malta show large piles of sand which seem to have been dumped in the area, with some even being used for hunting structures.

“Isn’t FKNK supposed to be taking care of the area or taking advantage of it and destroying it even more?” the person who sent in the photos enquired.

Upon reaching out to FKNK president Lucas Micallef, he explained that it is actually soil which is being used as part of the ongoing regeneration project.

“That is actually soil, which was placed there by Ambjent Malta, with the aim of adding more soil in areas which are lacking, as part of the regeneration project,” Micallef explained.

This is not the first time that the FKNK has been questioned on piles of rubble and debris popping up at the aforementioned nature reserve.

The woodland is currently being managed by the FKNK, Malta’s hunting lobby, after it was signed off by the Lands Authority in October 2020.
