Mtarfa Council’s Green Initiative Sees Locals Plant And Foster Trees… And They’ve Already Planted 500 Seeds!
We can definitely all agree that Malta needs more greenery, but not everyone is up for doing something a little more concrete. Well, a group of locals just accepted the challenge in the most awesome way possible.
15 people, two local scout groups and two primary schools participated in the Foster a Tree initiative facilitated by the Mtarfa Local Council and managed by the Ecological Manager Benjamin Camilleri.
The initiative involves a series of workshops aimed to highlight the dynamics of seed propagation, sapling maintenance, following the planting of indigenous tree species in the wild.
Various seeds (such as Judas, Sandarac Gum and Bay Laurel) have been planted so far. These seeds were collected in Rabat’s Mtarfa or Buskett areas because of how close they are to certain indigenous tree species.
Participants will be fostering and maintaining the saplings for two years and after that period, a workshop will be organised to plant the matured trees in their own wild habitats across Mtarfa.
People tend to forget that trees are extremely important for us; not only do they provide oxygen, but they also fight climate change, clean the air and provide a habitat for wildlife.
Mtarfa Primary School and a school in ?amrun will participate in the two upcoming workshops predicting to plant 300 – 500 new saplings.
