Muża Exhibition Reimagines The Natural World Shaken Beyond Its Tipping Point

An exhibition currently showcasing at Muża seeks to reimagine the natural world shaken beyond its tipping point, combining the themes of art and the environment.

After a 7-year hiatus, artist Tonio Mallia presents a new series of paintings that re-imagine the world, where the tensions between the human and natural world are no longer at play, nor are they creative or life-giving.

“They have devolved into a tyrannical order in which mankind becomes subject to its own freedoms,” the exhibition synopsis reads.

“Humanity turns its back on itself when it turns its back on nature, misappropriating and exploiting it, corrupting its beauty into a place of war—Bellum—the war that destroys the world, the war waged by a man who, no longer a steward of the earth, abandons the scales and becomes death, as Oppenheimer would say.”

“In the empty fairgrounds and the desolate fields, in the mangled trees and the rising seas, in the plague-infested skies and desperate flights, here is mankind—our humanity—hanging in the balance.”

The exhibition of paintings is currently ongoing at the Camerone Hall at the Muża museum in Valletta’s Merchants street, available until 11th September.

A powerful trailer of the ongoing exhibition was shot by Bruce Micallef Eynaud, depicting a symbolic take on the current environmental situation.

Mallia has been actively pursuing a unique creative vision for the past 30 years, exploring a multitude of artistic expressions and mediums.

Born in Malta in 1955, he began his artistic career as a painter of landscapes in watercolours, a medium with which he has continuously experimented and through experience perfected his working methods.
