New Family Park Taking Shape In Baħar Iċ-Ċagħaq
A long-abandoned stretch of land in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is being transformed into a new family park, with works progressing on what will soon become one of the area’s most accessible and nature-focused community spaces.
The 5,500m² site, located between the Coast Road and a nearby residential zone, was visited by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and European Funds Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, together with members of the Naxxar Local Council and Project Green.
The project will preserve existing indigenous trees while adding 200 new ones, eventually creating natural shade over 57% of the park, more than 3,100m², once the trees mature. The development includes play equipment for all ages, quiet zones, accessible play areas, solar-powered features and a new water reservoir with a dedicated irrigation system to support the greenery.
Minister Dalli said the park marks another step in turning forgotten land into vibrant, community-serving green spaces, emphasising that the project strengthens local biodiversity while integrating natural geological features into its design. Zrinzo Azzopardi added that the initiative forms part of a wider €24 million EU-funded investment aimed at regenerating public spaces and enhancing Malta’s environmental sustainability.
Throughout excavation works, continuous archaeological monitoring has been carried out, with sections of Lower Coralline Limestone, discovered during reservoir construction, set to be preserved and creatively incorporated into the final layout. With excavation nearing completion and construction moving steadily ahead, the project is on schedule and being developed closely with the Local Council to ensure it meets the community’s needs.
What was once an abandoned site is now on track to become a lush, inclusive park that will offer shade, play areas and a peaceful green escape for residents and visitors alike.
