Night Patrol Rangers Encounter Fire At Miġra l-Ferħa Caused By ‘Bonfire Or BBQ Gone Wrong’
Rangers on night patrol encountered a spreading fire at Miġra l-Ferħa last night at around 1.30am, with the Civil Protection Department called on-site to extinguish the flames.
Whilst patrolling the area on another report, members from the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) saw an ongoing wildfire within the Natura2000 site in Rabat, with a rather large area being impacted by the fire.
“It was quite evident that this was a bonfire or bbq gone wrong with seemingly hot charcoal disposed of in the vegetation,” the MRU said in a statement.
“Due to the strong wind, the ember picked up later during the evening and the fire spread. Unfortunately some reptiles were found dead in the ashes of the fire.”
The unit thanked the Civil Protection Department for their swift response, who came on site to make sure the fire won’t spread any further.
“This is one of many reasons why one shouldn’t kindle fire directly on the ground, nor on windy days like this evening,” the MRU stressed.
The MRU is a local voluntary organisation focused on reporting environmental crimes in Malta, prevention and education.
