Over 10 Groups Spotted Igniting Illegal Fires On Protected Mtaħleb Site
Over 10 groups of people were spotted doing illegal fires on a Natura2000 site, the Malta Ranger Unit said on social media.
The groups were seen on protected garigue in Mtaħleb and Rabat and together, they had over 20 vehicles occupying the areas, with some even driving over protected flora.
Upon being informed, the groups adhered to the instructions given by the rangers, so no authorities were called on-site.
They were made to clean up, take out the fires, clean the fire pits, and move their vehicles to the road, the NGO stated.
The ranger unit explained that since the Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) has only around 15 police officers who were busy monitoring illegal poaching, the rangers took an “educative approach this time.”
“We once again urge the government to increase the resources for EPU. We as Rangers shouldn’t have to choose when to call for their assistance and not.”
“Should these individuals be seen again in this area and displaying the same behaviour, our Rangers will proceed with filing Police reports for prosecution in Court (aggravating circumstances).”
The NGO relies on donations which can be given here.
