PA Approves Disputed 51-Apartment Block On Rural Land In Nadur
The Planning Authority has just approved a disputed 51-apartment block on rural land in the town of Nadur, Gozo.
Located along Triq il-Qortin, the proposed block, initially proposing 71 apartments prior to being scaled down, proved to be highly controversial among the residents.
The development application is proposing the excavation of the site to the required levels, proposed construction of basement garages to accommodate 61 car spaces and 40 overlying residential apartments, and 11 penthouses, including landscaping.
The decision on the block was suspended by the authority back in January, over ownership issues that arose during the screening period.
Over 1,300 people had submitted their representations against the controversial permit, and while it had initially led to the suspension of the application, it returned again just a few months later.
The plans directly run counter to the Gozo and Comino local plans, with the development also set to take up huge parts of arable land.
Unfortunately, the approval of this project also sets a dangerous precedent for the further development of rural and arable land.
It will also be creating restrictions on access to the Natura 2000 site of Il-Qortin, as well as increasing parking problems on an already narrow road.
From an aesthetic point of view, the plans also jar considerably with the rest of the residential buildings currently in the area and will prove to be a massive eyesore to the skyline of Nadur.
