Parliamentary Petition Launched To Turn Mellieħa Area Allocated For Development Into Public Green Space
A group of Mellieħa residents has just launched a parliamentary petition to turn a Mellieħa green area that has just been allocated for residential development into a public open space.
This comes after PN MP Ivan Castillo called out the “hypocrisy” behind the recently announced Project Green initiative after an open space in Mellieħa was designated for development and placed for sale by the government.
Castillo publically reacted to an advert on the Lands Authority website, which details a 5,300 square metre site to be used for residential dwellings, with 30% of the site to be retained as an open public space.
The petition, which already garnered over 200 signatures in two days, calls upon the government to withdraw the tender and instead preserve this government land for public use and enjoyment as a green open space.
“We, the residents of Mellieħa, respectfully bring to the attention of the House of Representatives our deep concerns regarding the tender for perpetual revisable emphyteusis of the open area bounded by Triq il-Miġbħa, Triq is-Sagħtar, and Wesgħat in-Narċis in Mellieħa,” it reads.
“Mellieħa has become a densely populated area with a heavily burdened infrastructure, coupled with a scarcity of green open spaces within its development zone.”
“The current oversupply of multi-unit dwellings highlights the need for more accessible green spaces, instead of additional residential units.”
“If the tender to transfer this government land to the private sector were to proceed, it would exacerbate the existing challenges faced by the community, causing additional strain on the infrastructure and further degradation of the quality of life for residents.”
They concluded by imploring the House of Representatives to take their concerns seriously and act in the best interest of the residents and the environment.
“We believe that the protection and preservation of green spaces are vital for the well-being of current and future generations.”
