Petition Gains Over 1,500 Signatures In Fight Against Toxic Tarmac Plant In Iklin

The situation in Iklin, Ibraġ, B’Kara and San Ġwann has only gotten worse since October, with residents speaking out – one of them even starting a petition on the parliament’s website which has garnered over 1,500 signatures.
Local residents have voiced complaints regarding the odour of tarmac emanating from the Bitmac plant, and the fact that it even penetrates closed windows during the night.
They are advocating for the implementation of environmental and health regulations on a tarmac plant located in Iklin, with the primary goal of reducing toxic emissions.
The petition, submitted by resident Dorian Xuereb emphasised that the community consistently experiences exposure to harmful fumes, which not only diminishes their quality of life but also presents significant health risks. Xuereb particularly highlights the detrimental impact on individuals with respiratory ailments, whose conditions are worsened by the persistent pollution.
“This is especially true for those among us with respiratory problems who find their conditions exacerbated by the relentless pollution,” Xuereb said in the petition.
He underscores the absence of environmental and health permits that has allowed Bitmac to operate without adequate oversight.
The petition urges the authorities to mandate Bitmac Ltd to obtain the necessary environmental and health permits prior to continuing their operations.
The petition currently has 1,526 signatures.
