PN MP Calls Out ‘Hypocrisy’ Behind Project Green As Open Mellieħa Space Allocated For Development

PN MP Ivan Castillo has called out the “hypocrisy” behind the recently announced Project Green initiative after an open space in Mellieħa was designated for development and placed for sale by the government.

Castillo publically reacted to an advert on the Lands Authority website, which details a 5,300 square metre site to be used for residential dwellings, with 30% of the site to be retained as an open public space.

This comes after just a few weeks ago, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli announced a €700 million project to transform local land into open spaces to be enjoyed by the public.

“While the government is promising to spend €700 million to designate land into open public spaces, an expression of interest has been issued through the Lands Authority for a huge open space in Mellieħa, along Triq is-Sagħtar and Triq il-Miġbħa,” Castillo said.

“Stop this madness and convert this open space into a green area as you promised to the electorate!”

“While the government buys land from third parties, and promises that it will not speculate, it is taking land it already has and selling it so that the existing open spaces can be turned into buildings,” he lamented.

“This land will be used for speculation, when should it be changed into an open space!”

Castillo continued to stress how the plot of land is the last open space within that particular urban development area, highlighting that it should be part of Project Green.

“This should be part of the ‘green project’ and immediately removed from the site of the Lands Authority,” he appealed.

He continued by referring to the Victor Calvagna Garden in Mosta, which was also a development area before it was converted into an open space.

“If the Labour Party refuses to do the same here it is already breaking the most ambitious election promises and discrimination against residents of Mellieħa!”

Castillo concluded by assuring that he will be working closely with residents to issue a parliamentary petition against the development area allocation.
