While the government has warmly welcomed the Tribunal’s decision on the Ħondoq bay marina, the Nationalist Party is supporting calls for the area to become a national park.

Yesterday, a landmark decision was taken for the Gozitan bay of Ħondoq ir-Rummien, after the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal rejected an appeal to develop the bay into a marina.

Both political parties welcomed the decision with satisfaction, however, the PN called upon the government to now truly “take words into action”.

“The Nationalist Party has been stressing for years that the government should obtain the land and transform it into a national park,” the PN said in a statement.

“This is what the Gozitan families deserve so that they can enjoy the beauty of the island instead of suffering through years of dust and traffic congestion,” it continued.

“The PN invites the government, to show that it is truly in favour of the protection of open spaces, by turning words into action.”

While speaking with Lovin Malta following the Tribunal’s decision, Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg expressed that he wishes the area would now become a national park.

“My dream is that this place becomes a national park where everyone can enjoy it,” he expressed.

Yesterday’s decision put a close to a 20-year saga since plans for the Qala Creek Project first surfaced back in 2002, with the Qala Mayor and various NGOs being at the forefront of the fight against the development.

During the last election campaign, the Labour Party had also pledged that it will make sure that the bay is not developed in any way.

Do you think Ħondoq should become a national park?
