Qalb Ambjent: Campaign Launched To Buy Back Maltese Land And Turn It Into Green Spaces

Malta is starving for green spaces and a new eNGO is launching a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of purchasing parcels of land across the islands to protect our wildlife and forestry from destruction.

Qalb Ambjent is looking to put power back into the people’s hands and safeguard our natural environment for future generations.

With this in mind, Qalb Ambjent aims to celebrate Malta’s wildlife through the swathes of land purchased back, providing a perfect place where adults and children can learn about and appreciate nature.

The funds will be used to help buy back the land, maintain it, and support Malta’s many eNGOs on their quest to improve Malta’s environment.

How does this work?

Prior to the setup of Qalb Ambjent, its founder (who wishes to remain anonymous) already supported local eNGOs and associations like the Majjistral Park Rangers in their own personal capacity and even helped with tree planting initiatives in their own hometown. Additionally, the founder has pledged to donate €10,000 of their own savings to kick start the crowdfunding campaign!

Each parcel of land acquired will be analysed by experts, its conditions assessed, and then suitable vegetation to be planted will be advised based on the respective area’s environmental and climatic conditions.

Entrance to the land will be entirely free for all members of the public, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t donate to this fantastic cause, which will safeguard the environment for all of us in the long term.

Who can help out?

Qalb Ambjent is appealing to anyone and everyone to get involved, whether you’re a corporate sponsor looking to give a helping hand or have a piece of land that would be perfect to form part of this project.

If you are a landowner with an ODZ parcel, you can grant Qalb Ambjent custodianship of the land for a long-term timeframe. This agreement will see the work and afforestation carried out by Qalb Ambjent can never be threatened by future development.

This initiative will not only help contribute to the fight against global warming, but it will also improve the environment, wildlife, and air purity. Those are things we can all enjoy.

And what better way to foster that sense of community that’s so intrinsic to Maltese culture than having a safe place that we all can enjoy.

Now, it’s looking to re-forest parts of the islands with indigenous trees, educating everyone in the process.

Qalb Ambjent has already been doing a lot of good work for the country, helping support NGOs such as Żibel and Get Trashed in their cleanups across the island. Now, it’s looking to re-forest parts of the islands with indigenous trees, educating everyone in the process.

“The founder of Qalb Ambjent has continuously supported the Rangers of Majjistral Park and the support given has meant that we could invest in equipment which enables us to carry out our duties more thoroughly,” Cami Appelgren said of the ambitious project.

“Green open spaces are essential to humans. Study upon study confirms that our mental health benefits from it, yet we see a decreasing amount of such untouched space around us.”

Our children can only love what they experience, so we need to give them land to spend time in. Untouched land. We need to teach the younger generations what nature is all about and why its safeguarding should a top priority.”

Steve Zammit Lupi, a Żebbuġ local councillor, also endorsed the project.

“We have come to a point where we realised our open public spaces are limited and mostly exclusive to remote areas away from where we live and work,” he said.

“This is why we must safeguard the remaining open spaces in urban areas, and return to the public open natural spaces where families can relax and enjoy nature. Kids also need areas to play.”

“As the country develops we realise how important play is for kids, as an opportunity to develop personal and social skills.”

“This initiative proposed by Qalb Ambjent although challenging is a unique opportunity to be a game-changer in the local scene. Here is a chance for all to contribute in every small way possible.”
