The disused site at Ta’ Ġawhar area in Safi has been transformed into a new picnic area and dog park thanks to an investment in the community. The project was carried out by Project Green and Ambjent Malta in collaboration with the Safi Local Council.

The design of the 1,000-square-meter dog park and picnic area reflects a commitment to sustainability. The outdoor furniture, including picnic tables, is made of sustainable materials, and the lighting and security cameras are powered by solar panels.

The area is adorned with greenery, including 30 new indigenous trees and 40 shrubs, which are watered using rainwater stored in a new reservoir built by Project Green. Additionally, new rubble walls and fencing have been installed to ensure the safety of all users of the space.

Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli attended the inauguration and highlighted that the site, which was previously an illegal dumping area, has now been transformed into a green open space for nearby residents.

The government aims to increase and regenerate open spaces in all localities while upholding a commitment to quality, accessibility, and sustainability. The collaboration between Project Green and stakeholders ensures that these open spaces cater to the needs and aspirations of the communities they serve.

In response to the community’s request, a new dog park has been established in the south of the island, along with a picnic area that is expected to be popular among families in the area.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said emphasised the importance of creating dog parks that are open day and night, in line with public demand. The government plans to work on this model to establish more dog parks in the future.

Project Green CEO Steve Ellul highlighted the significance of water management and harvesting in the parks to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the newly added trees and plants, promoting longevity.

The Ta’ Ġawhar Dog Park and Picnic Area in Safi is open every day of the week, from Monday to Sunday.
