After a week of contamination, the sea off Wilġa Street, St Julian’s, is officially safe to swim in.

The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health issued a statement yesterday to notify that the waters are once again fit for bathing and thus the health warning has been lifted.

The contamination was a result of an overflow of foul water that came from below the rocks. However, repeated sample testing of seawater indicates that it is now safe to swim in.

The exact site code is B05 Wilġa Street and signs were previously fixed in the area, warning people not to bathe in the waters.

During the summer months, Malta faces a surge in sea contamination as a result of improper use of private drainage systems as well as a higher strain on infrastructure struggling to keep up with demand.

Will you be swimming in the waters off Wilġa Street now?
