Smoking Ban Coming To Golden Bay And Ramla l-Ħamra From Next Year

Starting next year, smoking will be banned at Golden Bay and Ramla l-Ħamra, except in designated areas.

These areas will be equipped with ashtrays that will be regularly cleaned, and beach enforcement will be carried out by the Malta Tourism Authority, ERA, LESA and the police.

Offenders will be fined €150.

This was announced by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela during the closing of the Saving Our Blue summer campaign.

Dalli said that this ban is intended to clamp down on cigarette butts, which take a long time to decompose, ending up in the sea.

“Malta is joining the countries that have introduced similar restrictions. We are protecting our marine environment for the common good.”

Abela said that this should be viewed as a pilot project intended to promote smoke-free public spaces.
