‘This Is A Nightmare For Residents’: New Supermarket Proposed On ODZ Land In Qormi
Residents of Qormi have started submitting their objections against a new supermarket being proposed on ODZ land along the Mrieħel bypass.
An application recently surfaced proposing the change of use of the site and the construction of a new supermarket along Triq il-Kummerċ.
The 4,000 sqm site also touches upon Triq is-Snajja, the Mrieħel bypass, and Vjal ir-Royal Malta Artillery.
The plans also include ancillary operational areas on the ground floor, offices on the first floor, as well as two underlying basement garages for a car park.
The application was filed by Daniel Degiorgio on behalf of Propay Ltd, together with architect Mark Arrigo, as listed in the publicly available application form.
“As residents of Triq il-Kummerċ, we are objecting to this submission to build a supermarket and various office spaces in an area that is considered to be ODZ,” one resident told Lovin Malta.
“Such proposals in an ODZ area should not even be considered. The PA should reject proposals that fall outside the development scheme,” they stressed.
“Our country is losing a lot of land to such horrendous development – especially when another supermarket is already available which only opened a few months ago at the Quad and also various new offices are being built in the same area at the time being.”
“This application is totally unsustainable, and shall result in significant environmental damage to the area hence the approval of this application is to be ruled out.”
“Is this even real? This is a nightmare for the residents! Take action and do not accept this building!” another representation read.
