WATCH: Thousands Of Maltese Bees Are Being Killed In Comino
Thousands of bees have been killed in Comino as photos and footage of piles of the insects’ dead bodies were uploaded to social media. The shocking images have left many wondering who is killing the sheer amount of bees – and why.
“In Comino. Thousands of honey bees are being destroyed by venomous traps? Why? Where is the authority?” asked Renzo Desira, who uploaded the photos and videos on Monday. Since then, the shocking post has already been shared nearly 100 times.
A Maltese pest controller and biologist, Arnold Sciberras, told Lovin Malta he believes this could be one of two possibilities
“There could be the possibility that someone is trying to control some pest species in an irresponsible way, trying to trap German wasps and hornets,” Arnold said. “But it is of my opinion that the culprit is killing the endemic Maltese bee on purpose.”
“It could be either because the bees are attracted to the sugary rubbish such ice creams, or because they are an insect that is going around and being a nuisance to tourists and customers,” Scibberas continued.
With more and more kiosks and businesses opening up on Comino, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if someone with a vested interest in the area was taking out the bees.
“Blue lagoon is a disaster. There’s too many people, too much rubbish, too many kiosks”
Arnold said that the thousands of killed bees are just the latest damage done to the area around Blue Lagoon and the main touristic spots in Comino, with businesses constantly pushing into the nearby environment in a bid to build their businesses up.
“To make more space, they’ve even destroyed the surrounding garrigue habitat,” he said.
