Watch: 250-Metre Trammel Net Entangled In Comino Reef Recovered By Żibel
Environmental NGO Żibel has just recovered another massive 250-metre net which was entangled in a part of Comino’s reef.
“The net measures approximately 200-250m, and seemed to have been on the reef a while since there was extensive growth in parts of the net,” Żibel founder Andrew Schembri told Lovin Malta.
“This is similar to other such nets we have found in the nearby areas. This type of net is known as a ‘Parit’ in Maltese, or trammel net in English.”
Some marine wildlife was also found within the net, with Żibel recovering a handful of crabs, starfish and seagrass.
“The organic growth in the net seemed to have prevented more fish from getting trapped in it, with us only being able to find a few bones of fish previously trapped,” he explained.
In these cases, fishermen often daisy chain more of these nets together to create a larger net, usually around 120-metre each.
Żibel is also encouraging divers and fishermen to continue reporting abandoned nets to them so that they can be recovered and environmental consequences can be minimised.
In the month of July, Żibel also recovered another 150-metre ghost net, which unfortunately had a number of dead fish attached to it.
