Twice In One Day: Balluta Bay Also Contaminated With E. Coli

Amid this spring heat, tourists will have to be wary about where they choose to swim as St Julian’s Balluta Bay is the second Maltese beach to be contaminated with E. coli today.

A notice was issued by the Office of the Superintendence of Public Health stating that bathing is not recommended at at the bay until further notice. The contamination is connected to microbiological factors like E. coli and I. enterococci, posing health risks to swimmers.

An almost identical warning was issued earlier this afternoon for St Georges Bay.

The Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are currently investigating to determine the source of the contamination while the duration of the contamination remains uncertain.

Warning signs have been placed, and the public will be informed through another statement once water quality is restored for safe bathing.
