Two San Ġwann Parking Areas To Become Open Spaces In Major Greening Project, Council Reveals

A major greening project envisaged for San Ġwann would see a large chunk of the village core, including two car parks, become an open space for the public to enjoy.

A council representative told Lovin Malta that the greening plan announced by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli yesterday was originally conceived by San Ġwann mayor Trevor Fenech.

“The San Ġwann local council is very happy that the Government has adopted this idea which is in the pipeline to be implemented,”

“This ambitious project includes, not only Vjal ir-Rihan, but also Misraħ Lourdes, Misraħ Lewża and Ġnien Karin Grech.”

“The idea was discussed and approved during a council meeting.  The concept plans had been concluded.  The idea was well received by central government, and included in its manifesto.”

Misraħ Lourdes and Misraħ Lewża are adjacent village squares opposite Ġnien Karin Grech, with the main road separating them from the garden.

While a small park already exists in Misraħ Lewża, the lion’s chunk of the area is currently taken up by road and parking spaces.

The plan would essentially expand Ġnien Karin Grech to Misraħ Lewża and Misraħ Lourdes, with traffic passing through Vjal ir-Rihan diverted through an underground tunnel.

Meanwhile, an underground tunnel will be built to compensate for the loss of parking spaces although its exact location hasn’t yet been confirmed.

San Ġwann’s local council said the project will not only create an open space in the town centre, but will also contribute to increased parking, better air quality and a better quality of life for our residents.

“We look forward to the launch of the public consultation and the feedback from NGOs who we invite to partner with us to create a better environment in our locality when this project is finalised,” it said.

This project will be overseen by Project Green, a new government entity spearheaded by financial consultant Steve Ellul which has been tasked with implementing the PL’s electoral pledge to invest €700 million in new green areas over a seven-year period.
