In a distressing reality concerning Mellieħa’s natural heritage, PN Councillor Gabriel Micallef has expressed grave concerns regarding a proposed development in a Natura 2000 site within the community.

Micallef has recently communicated these concerns to key political figures, including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and Members of Parliament, with the hope of halting the ongoing project.

“This decision directly contradicts the stance of our council and disregards the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA). This is unacceptable!”

In a letter to these public officials, Micallef voiced his disappointment and alarm over the Planning Authority’s decision to push forward with the development, despite significant opposition from both the local council and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

“The approval of this project in a Natura 2000 site sends the wrong message to both the public and potential investors.”

The councillor highlighted that the ERA, in accordance with a shared commitment to environmental conservation, had initially denied permission for the development.

This decision was made considering the ecological significance of the Natura 2000 site and its crucial role in biodiversity conservation.

However, the Planning Authority disregarded the ERA’s decision and the objections raised by the local council, granting the permit for the project.

Micallef’s appeal calls for personal intervention from these political leaders, urging them to conduct a thorough review of the decision-making process surrounding the issuance of the permit for the contentious development.

He also implores the officials to address the lack of accountability within the Planning Authority, ensuring that such instances of disregarding environmental considerations set forth by the ERA are not repeated.

“Engaging citizens and local communities in discussions about proposed projects can lead to better outcomes and help rebuild public trust in our institutions.”
