‘Up To 830kg Per Locality Daily’ – Mysterious Pink Box Revealed As Xummiemu Campaign Against Illegal Waste
The wait is over. We finally got a look at what’s underneath the pink box that popped up in Valletta on Monday morning and we think we all needed to see it.
In the early morning of last Monday, a mysterious pink box showed up at Triton Square in Valletta, a location bustling with foot traffic. Of course, this sparked immediate speculation as the location has seemingly become a hotspot for publicity stunts in recent years.
Well, we finally got our answer to what was hiding beneath the pink veil. To many passersby’s surprise the monolith was in reality a transparent box filled with different kinds of nasty waste.
It’s easy to notice that local environmental activist organisation, Xummiemu, was the mind behind this project as evident by the stickers plastered around the box, which also displayed some thought provoking messages.
“An average of 830kg of illegal waste is collected daily from each locality in Malta,” is written on one of the sides of the container, “Illegal dumping destroys our environment. Do not litter. Report it!”
The organisation reported that 45 tonnes of litter and illegal waste is collected daily around our island, an equivalent volume of approximately two double-decker buses.
The shock factor behind this stunt was clearly meant to spark a discussion regarding illegal dumping and recycling in the nation, urging people to contact the relevant 1718 hotline to report any environmentally harmful activity or illegally discarded waste.
