Sewage was sweeping into the sea in the Mellieħa taċ-Ċumnija area on Sunday afternoon due to damage in an air pipe at the North Sewage Treatment Plant, the Water Services Corporation (WSC) told Times of Malta.

“Partially treated water was discharged during two time brackets on Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning,” a WSC spokesperson told Times of Malta.

The incident was first reported by PN MEP Peter Agius who uploaded footage to social media showing the area contaminated with sewage on Tuesday morning.

“You aren’t throwing drainage into the sea, right, [Environment Minister] Miriam Dalli,” Agius wrote in his caption.

A WSC spokesperson said that the incident was first noted on Sunday afternoon and technical personnel started investigating. The technical teams traced the incident to a damaged air pipe which caused a thickener overflow into the treated water outlet.

The repair works started as soon as the teams noticed the fault, the spokesperson said. They added that the repairs were completed by Tuesday morning.
