Today is World Ocean Day – and local environmental NGO Żibel has unveiled that it has collected over 11 tonnes of waste from Paradise Bay’s waters alone in the last five years.

This comes following yet another successful clean-up over the weekend, which saw a whopping 2,346kg of trash collected by volunteers.

“Over the past five years, we’ve cleaned Paradise Bay to celebrate the ocean and all it gives us. We’ve collected over 11.2 tonnes from this location and brought over 800 volunteers here since 2017,” Żibel founder Andrew Schembri told Lovin Malta.

“Last Saturday was no different, some serious cleaning went down by our amazing volunteers,” he said.

Saturday’s clean-up took volunteers five hours, with the stellar assistance of 62 divers, freedivers and coastal volunteers.

Volunteers collected 128.42 kg of plastic, 231.87 kg of ropes and fishing gear, 10.10kg of glass, 467.14 kg of metal and 1,509 kg of mixed and bulky waste.

“Paradise Bay is always the toughest clean-up of the year. Logistically it requires a lot of preparation and effort in the build-up to the event. Thankfully our volunteers are always up for an adventure! Everything we learn from Paradise Bay has helped us tackle the remote parts of the islands,” Schembri explained.

“The first time we went there in 2017, we couldn’t believe how much debris we found, it was humbling and eye-opening,” he said.

“The debris found at Paradise Bay is mostly washed up from the Mediterranean, we find items from North Africa and Southern Europe there all the time,” he explained.

All the data collected was also passed on to ERA, The Ministry for Environment, the EU and other NGOs.
