Watch: Harmless Leopard Snake Spotted Striking At Siġġiewi Field
A harmless yet defensive leopard snake was spotted in its striking stance in someone’s field in Siġġiewi.
The footage was sent over by the owner of the field to Lovin Malta, showing the snake, known as lifgħa in Maltese, hissing and striking towards the camera.
Speaking with snake conservationist Ellie Dobbs, she explained how snakes only get into a striking stance when they are feeling threatened.
“Although the snake is harmless and not venomous in any way, the general public should still refrain from trying to hold or disrupt the snake, as it’s illegal to do so,” Dobbs explained.
The leopard snake is one of Malta’s native snakes, with its distribution largely remaining unknown across the islands.
“This is the species that is predominantly known for its associations with St Paul. It is also regarded as one of the most beautiful European snakes,” Dobbs told Lovin Malta.
