Article Featured Image

Turtles trapped in fishnets, ropes and hooks in Malta have become a frequent sight as of late. Local fishermen have been taking matters into their own hands, trying their best to free these poor creatures at the risk of endangering the turtles’ lives.

Now we have a proper how-to video to make these impromptu rescue missions safer for the marine creatures involved.

Azure and Nature Trust Malta have teamed up to offer you some sound advice about what you need to do if you encounter an injured turtle. In a new joint video, Lily, a loggerhead turtle and Nature Trust rescue, is released back into the wild, and features a step-by-step guide on what to do when spotting a turtle in distress.

If you do manage to catch the turtle, you need to cover it with a wet towel and keep it in a well shaded area and contact Nature Trust Malta.

It’s never ideal to free the turtle yourself, as you might make the injuries far worse. When turtles are released back into the sea without proper care and rehabilitation, they will most probably die from the injuries sustained.

When in doubt, contact Nature Trust; they will be able to assist the turtle and take it to a specialised vet.
