Local explorer and kayaker Pierre Farrugia has recently embarked on a voyage to explore the forgotten Rinella cave, discovering some underwater canons along the way.

“Today I share with you another kayak adventure with another hidden gem. I left for the journey from Rinella Bay in Kalkara,” Farrugia said.

“First I made my way to an area, called il-lido, most probably because this area was used in world war two by the British soldiers as the lido area,” he explained.

“From here I headed to the breakwater lighthouse, so I can make my way to the cave with the underwater cannons. From the sea, you cannot recognise this cave and is well hidden in the cliffs.”

“Then the more you get closer you start seeing some light coming from above.”

“Since this cave is situated under Fort Ricasoli, and the canons used to be a part of the fort. This cave was eroded by the force of the sea and the ceiling gave way to the enormous weight of three canons, that ended into the sea.”

“Once you enter, the water is very shallow and care must be taken if the sea is rough, as waves here increase in size and force and you can easily end up on the rocks! From above one can easily see the canons,” he explained.

“When you put either your camera or your head under the sea you can see this hidden jewel, which is a rare find. Three beautiful and well-preserved canons.”

Continuing on one can see the damage the sea has done to the Ricasoli outer wall, which is a pity and hope it can get restored soon.”

“From here, I then made my way to a pillbox nearby, once build to withstand the force of a bomb, now defeated by the force of the sea.”

Farrugia is known for his various explorations around the Maltese islands while hiking and also while kayaking, along with his historical knowledge of a number of locations.
