Watch: Leader Illegally Directs Group Of Youngsters Onto Protected Golden Bay Sand Dunes
A group of youngsters were spotted being illegally directed by their training leader onto the protected sand dunes of Golden Bay in Manikata during an exercise session this morning.
The biodiversity of the sand dunes, which have been closed off for years, is protected via S.L 549.83, as per Majjistral Park Regulations.
Multiple signs are affixed in the area stating that it is illegal to step onto the protected area.
The Malta Ranger Unit (MRU), which received a video of the ordeal, is now appealing for the public to come forward with any information on the group.
“MRU urges the public to be observant of signage guiding them about the habitats and the regulations within those. Safeguarding the sand dune is essential for the health of Ramla tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay),” Ranger Cami Appelgren told Lovin Malta.
“Seeing youngsters being led in by an adult, who should be a role model, is hurtful for anyone working in this field,” she expressed.
“We hope that this group reaches out or that someone recognises them and inform us so that we may follow up.”
The signs not to enter are seen in this footage placed exactly where the leader entered, with the group also having to go into the area by lifting the ropes of the fence.
“Disregarding all warning signs and going into the dunes has a great negative impact on the flora and also undo much of the hard work that the Park has put into it,” MRU said on Facebook.
They also thanked the person who placed the report with MRU and reminded the public that wherever there is a fence, look for signs and read the information on them.
MRU, which is a voluntary organisation, is focused on prevention, education and enforcement of the Environment Laws in Malta.
