Watch: Litterers Should Face Mandatory Community Service, Leading Maltese Cleanup Activist Urges

A leading Maltese cleanup activist has called for strict anti-littering enforcement, including mandatory community service, after discovering that picnickers left a copious amount of rubbish in Pembroke.

Mark Galea Pace shared videos and photos of picnic tables by the Pembroke clock tower strewn with bottles, trays, takeaway cartons and other rubbish that he took over the weekend.

“Inhumane, ignorance and selfishness at its best,” he said. “No amount of school education, tree planting and clean ups will teach them. Proper, dedicated park rangers, fine on the spot, mandatory community service. Only action is the key.”

One of Malta’s leading clean-up activists, Galea Pace is the co-founder of the Coast Is Clear Foundation. He recently took his activism all the way to Mount Everest, climbing to base camp while cleaning up the trek leading to it.
