Watch: Murky Water From Ta’ Qali Project Construction Site Dumped Into Surrounding Roads

The roads surrounding the ongoing Ta’ Qali regeneration project have been repeatedly spotted filled with murky brown water, even on non-rainy days.

A pedestrian who often frequents the area flagged the issue, submitting photos and videos of the state of the area to Lovin Malta.

“As if the insanely large and deep potholes weren’t enough, the contractor is daily ditching polluted water from the construction site into the road, from early morning, for the entire day,” he told Lovin Malta.

Videos seen by the newsroom show the pipe clearly originating from the construction site, dumping the unwanted water into the public road.

“Every possible access point to and from the area (there are two) is flooded and slippery. And this is where people have to walk or cycle through,” he highlighted.

Lovin Malta reached out to the Ministry for Public Works and Planning to enquire about the aforementioned issue.

“The Public Works Department has received a statement from the contractor stating that the water being pumped off-site is the stormwater that accumulates within the excavated site after rainfall occurs,” a spokesperson told Lovin Malta.

“There are no grey water installations on site and the water is purely stormwater. This is not polluted water, nor stagnant.”

“However, one can appreciate that since such stormwater is derived from a building site, it has several dust elements which when mixed with water, turn the latter into a stone-coloured liquid that is not hazardous.”

“Furthermore, action will be taken by the contractor to check if potential alternatives to the current pumping are available to avoid letting the water run off the road surface,” it said.

While the Ministry has assured that this is not polluted water, one can immediately argue that regardless, run-off water from a construction site should not be dumped into the surrounding roads, but should be taken care of in an adequate manner.

Have you personally experienced the surrounding roads in this state?
