While Żibel was doing a clean-up in Marina, Kalkara they discovered just weeks before Christmas what they described as “their very own sleigh from the sea” which is a 346kg submerged boat. This boat was one of the standouts finds during their final clean-up of the year.

The Kalkara clean-up, which concluded Żibel’s 2024 efforts, made an impressive 1,036.7kg of waste. The volunteers sorted through the haul, with the results call upon an ongoing issue of marine pollution:

• Fishing gear: 36.9kg
• Plastic: 107.9kg
• Glass: 100.3kg
• Metal: 211.4kg
• Mixed waste: 580.2kg

The boat, weighing in at 355.8kg accounted for a hefty part of the collection.

Żibel, an NGO dedicated to environmental clean-ups and waste management across Malta, have a dedicated team of volunteers—dubbed “land helpers” and “ocean warriors”—to retrieve the hefty relic.

After hours of hard work hauling, lifting, and dragging the boat to their waste skip, the group celebrated another successful operation, displaying the power of community and teamwork.

It starts with you! Join Żibel’s mission to protect our seas!
