WATCH: Plastic Police Are Now Totally A Thing On Malta’s Beaches
We’ve been seeing a steady rise of plastic awareness in Malta, as it should be. Because let’s face it, the last thing you want to look at when you hang out at the beach is trash.
Organisations, cleanup initiatives, and even random passers-by are getting into the plastic-free movement. Enter Zanzi Homes and Quicklets, fresh off their amazing summer campaign called Plastic Police. Every Saturday for the past two months, these guys have been donning their fluorescent green uniforms to raise awareness at local beaches.
Collecting rubbish as they stroll the beaches, they’ve also taken to exchanging plastic straws for paper ones, visiting beachgoers and even stopping by kiosks to get their message across.
Their first Plastic Police cleanup took place on the 7th of July at Exiles, where they started out with just six participants. Other cleanups took place at Armier bay, Fra Ben, Ġnejna, Mellieħa Bay, Pretty Bay, Golden Bay and Riviera and Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, steadily racking up participants over the two months.
Plastic Police have also sponsored #WaveofChange swimmer Neil and cleaned four seabeds around the island in the past couple of months. And that’s not all – with 2018 fast ending the guys are are already planning next summer’s cleanup, where they will extend their work for three months instead of two and they intend to introduce reusable water containers to exchange for plastic bottles.
