Watch: Post Għalina Campaign Releases Powerful Manoel Island Video Ahead of Petition Deadline

The Manoel Island: Post Għalina campaign have released an artfully produced video to promote their petition in the last few days of signature collection.

The campaign is led by members of FAA and Moviment Graffitti and has been calling for renegotiation of the contract between MIDI plc and Government in order to return Manoel Island to the public as a park. This comes in light of talks between the two entities following MIDI’s failure to stick with the originally stipulated timeline for the project.

The video, produced entirely pro-bono, features model and science graduate Madeleine Baldacchino and television personality Jeanine Rodgers Scerri, shot by local cinematographer Benjie Zammit, and directed by internationally acclaimed director, Alex Camilleri (“Luzzu”).

“Manoel Island belongs to the public. I am proud to have directed this video in support of the Manoel Island: Post Għalina campaign and to stand with those fighting for its preservation as a space for all,” said Alex Camilleri in a statement.

The video is shot entirely on Manoel Island and it aesthetically portrays the value this place has acquired since activists fought for public access to be restored back in 2016. Manoel Island is the heart of a diverse and vibrant community who visit to socialise, swim, enjoy nature, and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

“I joined this project because Malta is already overdeveloped, and our infrastructure is straining under the pressure. The last thing we need is another exclusive commercial zone. Manoel Island is one of the few green, open spaces left, and it should be protected for everyone, not sacrificed for profit,” said Benjie Zammit in a statement.

The parliamentary petition calling for Manoel Island to be designated a national heritage park will close this Sunday, 25th May at 9am. Over 18 000 residents of the Maltese Islands have already backed this call. The greater the show of public backing, the stronger we can demonstrate the widespread consensus behind this vision.

The petition can be found here: https://parlament.mt/en/petition?id=257 or by visiting the campaign’s website: www.manoelislandcampaign.com.
